The Director General, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, Julie Okah-Donli, while defending the agency’s 2018 budget before the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, revealed that more than 25,000 Nigerians were held in slave and sex camps in Libya.

She said about 5000 of the victims have been repatriated so far. In her words, "a large number of Nigerians have also been returned from other countries in Europe and Africa. All these people need to be properly received, profiled and assisted. NAPTIP has been working in conjunction with other governmental and non-governmental agencies such as NEMA, International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and others to provide help to these unfortunate Nigerians.”

The NAPTIP DG lamented that in spite of the evils of human trafficking, not so much attention was being paid to the menace. She said that this recent trend which marked the resurgence of the slave trade was more alarming and required the attention it deserved.  According to her, the task before the agency is enormous while budgetary allocations have been comparatively low. ”It is my honor and privilege to raise a cry for help in this hallowed chamber on behalf of the most vulnerable members of the society, especially women and children. In recent months, the odious and perverse consequences of human trafficking and irregular migration were forcefully brought to our television screens with gory tales,” she said.

She urged the Senate that massive public awareness as well as behavioral change campaigns be established and sustained from the grassroots to the national level for this evil of human trafficking to be reduced and eventually eliminated.

While presenting her case, the NAPTIP boss further said many victims of trafficking needed to undergo skills acquisition training or formal education. Nevertheless, Ms Julie commended the federal government and other stakeholders for their support in the wake of the recent slave trade of Africans.

Is the grass really greener on the other side? Going out of Nigeria via the Sahara in search of greener pastures has always been dangerous with record mishaps and tragedies befalling immigrants whether on the high sea or in the scorching desert. The recent addition to the fray- slave and sex camps were a direct consequence of the breakdown of law and order. Anarchy is at an all-time high in Libya- so, immigrant should expect no right or protection.

On the home front, it is high time that all arms of the government- ministries, agencies and other relevant apparatus are adequately funded and deployed to combat the supply chain for Nigerian immigrants who are being converted to slaves. The slave supply chain in Libya has been largely facilitated by the absence of a viable government control, the continual flow of greener-pastures seeking immigrants: and some historical belief and culture of keeping slaves by Arabs. Atop of this factors sits the greed for filthy lucre that feeds the momentum brothers to sell their kind to Arabs for financial and status benefits.

Ultimately the joke is on us as the Nigerian government needs to up its game and create an enabling environment for its citizens to pursue and achieve their dreams in Nigeria.

We at ScholarsVine therefore propose this 4-Prong solution:

  1. Energy:
Adequate and uninterrupted electricity power supply will go a long way in encouraging more industrial development. This will attract more local and foreign investments to Nigeria as the hub for sub Sahara Africa Business Development.

  1. Education:
Better educational funding and regulations would ensure that our graduates are top- notch and in high demand regionally and globally. Incidentally, this has been happening even with the absence of government's rightful role. Add good government support and Africa and indeed the world would feel the impact of Nigeria more.

  1. Affordable healthcare for all Nigerians: This is a basic role for government to take care of its people who take care of the government through taxes and electioneering.
  2. Re-orientation: The redirection through "Orientation" of the youthful energy (the escape velocity) with which our youths attempt dangerous journeys to Europe towards nation building. This is the last and most important factor. As it involves the zeal  and willingness of the people to make things work against all odds. Nigerians are already noted for the zeal for success, and would gladly supply this ingredient if properly empowered and oriented.

"Wilder is going to be getting a contract from us ASAP," Hearn said. "It's obviously the fight we want. There is a lot of sorting out to do for this fight, but great news that in principle he seems to be on board for the idea of coming to the UK for the fight. We're going to be dealing with it and we're going to be making sure he gets the relevant paperwork."

Wilder tweeted : "The $50M offer for him to fight me next in the U.S. is still available. Today I even agreed to their offer to fight Joshua next in the UK. If he prefers the fight in the UK, the ball is in their court. It's up to them to choose."

Not long after, we got a picture from Joshua on twitter with the caption "getting ready to rumble". Everybody assumes he is talking about the proposed fight that will turn reality soon.

Wilder's co-manager Shelly Finkel fed us some juicy bits, "We have agreed to the terms that Eddie has put out to us for a fight in the U.…
