Divorce and cases of separation in the entertainment industry always trend for long periods on social media. Celebrity marriages which are usually staged with great pomp and noise, tend to crash almost as fast as they click on. While some marriages have stood the test of time others have not been so lucky.

Here is a short list of some Nigerian marriages that failed and ranked high on Nigerian gossip sites in 2017. We're having higher hopes that such tales will not be heard in 2018. The bad memories of the past should stay there and not be dwelt upon.

 1. Mercy Ayigbe and Lanre Gentry

In April, photos of Mercy Aigbe's battered face spread all over social media platforms and newsmen that the marriage of star actress, Mercy Aigbe, to Lanre Gentry was about to hit the rocks.

It was reported that a fight between the couple led to Mercy's bleeding, after which she rushed to the office of the Lagos State Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Commissioner, Lola Akande, to report the matter.

The 52-year-old hotelier appeared in court after failing to show up twice and was eventually remanded in Kirikiri prisons, Lagos until he met bail demands of N500, 000 and two sureties who reside in Lagos and have landed properties. He was granted bail after he was arraigned at an Ikeja magistrate court on a three-count charge of domestic violence, assault and threat to life.

The couple were married for seven years and the union produced a son. While it was Mercy’s second marriage, it was Gentry’s third marriage.

The actress who had accused her husband of physical violence, which she said affected her sight, and caused her to bleed internally for over three weeks, disclosed their separation in a tell-it-all interview with BroadwayTV.

 2. Tonto Dikeh and Olakunle Churchill

It seemed all was rosy and delightfully pleasant for Tonto Dikeh and Oladunni Churchill. Well....that was until  until January 2017 came knocking and the marriage hit the rocks. The actress would eventually share messy details of her marriage.

Tonto Dikeh released photos and messy details of her failed marriage but all these were countered by her husband who disclosed that he never abused the actress claiming that he was the victim of a woman who was under the influence of drugs.

The duo have continued to slander each other and reveal messy details of themselves on social media. Theirs is arguably the messiest Nigerian celebrity breakup of 2017 and in a long while.

While it is Tonto’s first marriage, it is Churchill’s second attempt. He was previously married to a certain Bimbo Coker. Churchill is a nephew of a former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo.
Tonto and Churchill met two and a half years ago at Escape Nightclub in Lagos during the birthday party of the latter’s brother. Tonto got pregnant six months after they met and they staged a glamorous traditional marriage on August 29, 2015 at Tonto’s hometown Rumukani in Rumukwuta, Rivers State.

The Nollywood star eventually announced that her marriage was not lecture perfect. She revealed she had moved out of the house with her son.

Churchill in company of his uncle, Bishop Dare, met with Tonto ‘s father, Sunny Dikeh, in Port Harcourt in June to retrieve the bride price. Churchill made the video of the intimate family event public on Instagram. For Tonto, on her instagram account, she celebrated the final dissolution of her marriage saying “The joy was indescribable.”

3. The marriage of Toke Makinwa and Maje Ayida was dissolved by a High Court in Igbosere, Lagos in October. The pair were married in 2014, but separated November 8, 2015.

In her book, ‘On Becoming', Toke shared details of her failed marriage presenting what transpired in the love triangle among herself, her estranged husband and Ms. Solomon, who is allegedly responsible for the crash of the union.

Ms. Solomon is a lawyer, mediator and Internet business coach. Maje had asked his ex-wife to stop the sale and promotion of her tell-all memoir, which detailed the topsy-turvy relationship between the two of them. Apparently those words fell on deaf ears.

4. Damilola Adegbite and Chris Attoh
Initially, the pair were evasive about the real status of their marriage. Fans noted that they stopped flaunting their love and family on social media sharing instead photos indicating the pair operated individually.

The 36-year-old Ghanaian star had proposed to Adegbite on a boat cruise in Manhattan, NYC in August 2014. The pair tied the knot on February 14, at the La Villa Boutique Hotel in Accra in 2015.

After months of speculation and denials, the Ghanaian actor, Chis Attoh finally admitted that his marriage was over.

5. Muma Gee and Prince Eke

They met at a Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG in Omole, Lagos State, and got married a few weeks later. After six years of marriage, the union was dissolved.

Muma Gee filed for divorce in February, citing domestic violence and infidelity as the reasons. Revealing the details that led to her divorce on Instagram, Muma Gee said that she suffered series of domestic violence from her estranged husband. She also disclosed that Prince Eke proposed to four different women while they were still married.

Countering these allegations, Prince Eke said Muma Gee abandoned him with their four children and ran off to be with another man. Although there have been many cases of failed marriages amongst celebrities in Nigeria there are still those who have succeded in theirs.

Putting Omotola and Joke Silva up for review, these two have succeded in their respective marriages thus far.

These few things are some of the things that they put in place to manage their marriages favorably.

Joke Silva said, "The issues that tend to break marriages are issues that are so small. They are just made to become hydra headed."
Omotola pointed out that one main important thing in any marriage is to avoid scandals, not to use any disagreement as a matter for quarrel.

Truly each couple has problems, but it is important to want to go through them together and want to be happy together. Joke Silva has revealed that there are times she also gets angry with her husband and there are moments he is also angry. According to her, at that point she is able to sense that there is deep trouble about to surface and then stop!

For Omotola, it is very important for partners to respect each other. She believes that everything in our life is destined and doesn`t happen accidently, which is why each person can find the one destined for him or her.

So to every celebrity, though standing in the face of the media and critics, when there is any misunderstanding with one's spouse, talk about it and if you have to argue about it, argue about it. And then at the end of the argument, make up. But it's not enough to separate. Regulate the extent to which incidents in your private life get shared with the world and on social media to avoid people turning things into what they aren't.

On the international scene, mega superstars, Beyonce and Jay-Z have been married for fifteen years and they are still going strong despite the media attention, and always being under the spotlight. They have built a brand, an empire and a family. The usual celebrity "tell it all on media" was missing in their relationship as both parties remained tight-lipped about their engagement not acknowledging to the press how or even if, it happened (although the massive rock on Beyonce!'s wedding finger gave it away).

Beyonce said, “We took our time and developed an unbreakable friendship before we got married.” Theirs is a close knit relationship and they don't go about washing dirty linens in public. She knew the wisdom of not sharing every detail of her life to the public and even when she did, it was always with class. She said: “I didn’t want a crazy picture or gossip story to break the news, so I decided to say nothing and proudly show my baby bump.”

Remember when Solange threw fits of rage at Jay Z after the Met Ball in 2014? Of course you do!
At the time, the reason for Solange's attack was never revealed, but a week after the footage leaked, they issued a joint statement saying they had resolved their issues.
The statement read: "As a result of the public release of the elevator security footage from Monday, May 5th, there has been a great deal of speculation about what triggered the unfortunate incident.
"But the most important thing is that our family has worked through it.
"Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public.
"They both have apologised to each other and we have moved forward as a united family."

Despite all the divorce rumours after Lemonade, the couple were laying low but still going strong and steady, traveling to romantic destinations around the world. First stop: Paris!

A friend once said, marriage for the right reason is fulfilling. It is one of the goodness of this life that adds to the joy of existence if built on the basis of right reasons.

This is 2018 staring us hard in the face. If you must marry this year and even after, marry purpose.. If you marry someone whose purpose has a relationship with your purpose, things will work out beautifully and you don't always have to broadcast every bit and part of your life. Keep some things, resolve your differences.. Work towards sustaining your relationship and try to make it a "till death do us part deal".

Happy New Year!
