LEAH SHARIBU TURNS 16 TODAY, IN CAPTIVITY!!!

Leah Sharibu was among the abducted 109 girls of the Government Girls Science and Technical College, Dapchi in Yobe State. The girls were abducted by the terrorist group, Boko Haram on February 19, 2018. Leah Sharibu who was aged fifteen at the time of the abduction in March 2018 turn 16 today, Monday. While 104 abducted girls were released to their parents, Leah Sharibu was held back by the captives because she refused to renounce her Christian faith.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT RELEASES NAMES OF DAPCHI ABDUCTED GIRLS

The names and some details of the 110 girls abducted girls from Government Girls Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State on 19 February,  2018, have been released by the Federal Government.

Out of the 110 missing girls, 8 are in JSS1, 17 in JSS2, 12 in JSS3, 40 in SS1, 19 in SS2 and 14 in SS3. The girls’ ages range from 11 to 19 years. In the same list, the contact address and phone number of each missing girl, was verified by a 26-member Screening Committee that includes the Executive Secretary, State Teaching Service Board, Musa Abdulsalam; Director, Schools’ Management, Ministry of Education, Shuaibu Bulama; Principal of GGSTC, Adama Abdulkarim; the two Vice Principals, Ali Musa Mabu and Abdullahi Sule Lampo; Admission Officer, Bashir Ali Yerima, and the Form Masters for all the classes.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, relocated to Yobe State on Tuesday to be fully involved in the search for the girls.

IN SPITE OF THE MASSIVE FAILURE, THE RESIT OF A LICENSING EXAMINATION IS NOT ACCEPTABLE - NMA

The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, is opposing against the planned resit examinations of the 437 foreign trained Medical and Dental graduates that failed the last Licensing Examination set by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN.
According to the NMA President, Professor Mike Ogirima, this planned move is “politically motivated and capable of casting a negative aspersion on the quality of MDCN to the medical world.” He further says that only the MDCN had the right to organise such examinations. Uzoka stressed that, “The licensing Examinations for foreign trained Medical and Dental graduates are usually done twice a year by MDCN. If anyone fails the examination, such a person is required to go back and prepare for the next examination." " There is nowhere in the world where you have a resit. $100 MILLION FOR SMEs IN AFRICA - CHINA DEVELOPMENT BANK, UNITED BANK FOR AFRICA

United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, and China Development Bank (CDB), the world’s largest development finance institution, have both signed a $100million seven-year loan agreement. The $100 million loan will enable UBA’ to easily finance the development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in African countries where UBA currently operates.
Group MD/CEO, UBA Plc, Mr. Kennedy Uzoka, said, “We are excited to partner with China Development Bank (CDB), the Development Financial Institution of the Chinese Government, on this historic transaction, as we strongly believe that the facility will serve as a catalyst to the sustainable development of commerce and industry in Africa through provision of critical financial interventions to SMEs across our presence countries.”

NEW MINIMUM WAGE WILL BE ANNOUNCED IN SEPTEMBER

By the third quarter of this year, a new minimum wage will be announced for the country. This statement was made by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige.

He further said: “Memoranda are being received from relevant bodies and persons to enable the determination of a new minimum wage for the nation. By the third quarter of this year, a new minimum wage will be announced for the country. “Better late than never because some state governors are still owing and cannot pay the current N18,000 minimum wage to workers. That’s why we are ensuring we bring all stakeholders along and announce the new minimum wage at the appropriate time.”
President of the NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, maintained that the current demand for the review of the current N18, 000 minimum wage was borne out of the current reality of higher cost of living, free-fall of naira, and high cost of goods and services. JAMB MOCK EXAMINATION HAS STARTED ON MONDAY

The Mock Examination prepared by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) started on Monday.
A total of 245,753 of the 1,652,795 candidates that registered for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) are expected to write the test.
The registrar of the board, Ishaq Oloyede has cautioned candidates against examination malpractice. Oloyede said, “Electronic devices, Mobile phones, spy reading glasses will be scrutinised, calculators or similar electronic devices, USB, CD, hard disks and/or similar storage devices. No candidates, examiners, invigilators will be allowed to enter the examination hall with wrist watches, cameras, pencils except HB pencils.”
The mock examination is optional. It is just an arrangement to test candidates’ readiness for the main UTME."

On Monday in Dapchi, Yobe State, over 90 girls were abducted from Government Girls Technical College. 
President Buhari has assured the families of the abducted students that no effort will be spared to bring succour to them. Mr President said, “When I received the devastating news of the attack on the school and the fact that the local authorities could not account for all the students, I immediately dispatched a high-level delegation on a fact-finding visit to the town. I also instructed the security agencies to deploy in full and not spare any effort to ensure that all the girls are returned safely, and the attackers arrested and made to face justice. “The entire country stands as one with the girls’ families, the government and the people of Yobe State. ON CORRUPTION INCREASING IN NIGERIA, TRANSPARENCY INTERNATIONAL PUBLISHED FICTION - PRESIDENCY

Days after Transparency International released a report on Nigeria's increasing corruption level, the Nigerian Presidency swooped in to criticise the report.
In a statement by presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, the presidency said TI was publishing fiction.
The statement read as follows: The presidency notes that while it welcomes constructive criticisms from the anti-corruption watchdog, Transparency International (TI), the organisation has a responsibility to reflect the larger picture of the concrete and verifiable achievements of the Buhari administration since it came into office in May 2015.

WE WILL OFFICIALLY GAZETTE ALL GRAZING ROUTES IN THE COUNTRY - COUNCIL OF STATE

The Council of State meeting that was organised by President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived at another decision to resolve the Herdsmen-farmers clashes. The decision was that, grazing routes will be gazetted nationwide.

Besides gazetting the routes, government would also provide resources for special grazing reserves where states would voluntarily make lands available. Due to the increasing rate of security challenges, clashes between herdsmen and farmers in Nigeria, the Council of State suggested this as the best method. Out of this meeting, some observations were made:

MARITIME UNIVERSITY GETS APPROVAL FROM NUC

The National Universities Commission (NUC), has given its consent to the Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State to commence undergraduate programmes.

According to a statement by Laolu Akande, media aide to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the NUC approved that academic activities commence in three faculties namely; Transport, Engineering and Environmental Management.
Faculty of Transport has four departments: Nautical Science, Transport Logistics Management, Marine Economics and Finance, Port Management.
Faculty of Engineering has five departments: Marine Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,  Petroleum and Gas Engineering.
Faculty of Environmental Management has four departments: Environmental Management and Pollution, Meteorology and Climate Change, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Marine Geology.

YOBE STATE GOVERNMENT APOLOGISES FOR FALSE NEWS

Yobe State government has apologised for a false report it released stating that some of the missing schoolgirls from the state had been rescued.
In a statement released last night, the government said: "The public may recall that we issued a statement last night in which we announced that some of the girls at Government Girls Science Technical College (GGSTC), Dapchi who went missing after Boko Haram terrorists had stormed their school last Monday were rescued by officers and men of the Nigerian Army who are currently executing the war against the Boko Haram Insurgents.
“We issued the statement on the basis of information provided by one of the security agencies that is involved in the fight against Boko Haram and which we had no reason to doubt.
“We have now established that the information we relied on to make the statement was not credible. The Yobe State Government apologises for that.

BILLY GRAHAM DEAD AT 99

American evangelical Christian evangelist and an ordained Southern Baptist minister, Billy Graham is dead.

Graham said, "Someday, you will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead. Don't you believe a word of it. I shall be more alive than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God."
Graham died from natural causes on February 21, 2018, at his home in Montreat, North Carolina, at the age of 99.

48 OUT OF MISSING 94 GIRLS RETURN - YOBE STATE GOVERNMENT

Out of the missing ninety-four students from Government Girls Technical College, Dapchi, the Yobe State Government announced the return of forty eight girls.
According to the state commissioner of education, Mohammed Lamin, 28 of the missing students returned on Tuesday night, with 20 more returning on Wednesday morning.
“This has brought down the 94 missing students realised at the yesterday headcount to 48 this morning. “We are still hopeful that more are returning soon”, he said.

SINGAPORE TO GIVE $300 DOLLARS TO EACH CITIZEN

Finance Minister in Singapore, Heng Swee Keat has announced that every citizen of Singapore, aged 21 and above will get an “SG Bonus” of up to S$300 each as the 2017 budget came in with a surplus of almost S$10 billion (US $7.6 billion).
The Finance Minister refered to this action as a “hongbao”, the Mandarin word for a monetary gift given on special occasions.
According to Heng Swee Keat, this “reflects the government’s long-standing commitment to share of the fruits of Singapore’s development with Singaporeans. ”
The “SG Bonus” will cost the government S$700 million (US $533million). The bonus will be paid according to people’s assessable income.
About 2.7 million people will get the payouts, which are due by the end of 2018. Those with an income of S$28,000 or below will be eligible to receive S$300, those whose incomes ranging from S$28,001 to S$100,000 will receive S$200, and those with incomes in excess of S$100,000 will receive S$100.

THERE WILL BE A QUICK RESPONSE SQUAD IN NASARAWA - CHIEF OF AIR STAFF

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Saddiq Abubakar has announced that a quick response squad will be established in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
This, he said, is part of the special operations unit aimed at adding value to the security atmosphere of Nasarawa State and also to create an enabling environment in the state. The wing is expected to have 150 Special Forces recent graduates from the Air College.
Another plan of the Chief of Air Staff is to provide medical outreach to the hinterlands of Nasarawa State.

The Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-makura while commending the efforts of the Airforce in combating insurgency in the north eastern part of the country said, the presence of the Air Force in Nasarawa will give residents a sense of protection to enable them go about their normal activities.

JAMB'S ANTI-CORRUPTION AND TRANSPARENCY UNIT

Professor Ishaq Oloyede, Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Registration Board (JAMB) has established an anti-corruption unit, the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU), within the agency. 

According to Professor Oloyede, this unit is a product of his anti-corruption reforms aimed at accountability and transparency in the management of government finances. 
The induction of members of the anti-corruption unit (ACTU) was conducted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
Members of the recently established unit have been assured of complete support by the JAMB Registrar. Oloyede said he would not hesitate to spend his personal money to facilitate their work if the need arises. 
Based on the numerous corruption matters being handled, I would say this a rapid response from the Registrar. While it is refreshing to see and feel the effect of the anti-corruption and transparency  unit, we hope that the unit will refrain from getting enmesh…

NO SCHOOL FEES, NO EXAM - BENUE STATE UNIVERSITY

One week after the Benue State University students staged a protest against the "no school fees, no examination" policy by the school, the school management declared the institution closed and immediately sent a circular demanding the students living in hostels pack out by 6pm of that Friday, the 16 of February. 
The 2016/2017 second semester examinations started on a note of mixed feelings and disarray as students who were yet to pay their school fees got sent out of the examination hall. Two weeks to the release of the examination timetable and the second semester exams generally, the Vice-chancellor, Professor Msugh Kembe had through the departmental Head of Departments advised all students to pay their fees.
