19 Year Old Nigerian, Youngest Designer to Showcase at New York Fashion Week

19-year-old Nigerian, Taofeek Abijako, has allegedly become the youngest designer to showcase his collection at the New York Fashion Week : Men's. History has been made people, celebrate!

Some of the outfits from his "Genesis" collection had statements like, “Disorder: In Mutiny We Trust” and “Palaver Child.”

Abijako explained how he sees his label Head of State+, “I approach Head of State+ as less of a brand and more of a case study. It’s me digging into my cultural upbringing while trying to have a firm grasp and understanding of it. My belief is furthering a philosophy of thoughtful, inconspicuous, and honest design across the board ."

He was born in Lagos Nigeria before he moved to join hi father in Albany. “It was an extreme culture shock. Back in Nigeria, seven of us lived in one room. At night, when everyone wanted to go to bed, we lifted the table and laid a mat on the floor where we all slept. Imagine going from that to having your own bedroom, 24/7 electricity, and water. It made me appreciate things more,” he said.

Abijako revealed his history with fashion: “My dad was a trained fashion designer while living in Nigeria and dealt mostly with local traditional garments. Growing up in an environment like that sparked my curiosity in design,” Abijako said.

The menswear label will be debuting its Spring/Summer ’19 collection at Men’s New York Fashion Week. His “Genesis” collection, will portray “the vibrancy of West African youth culture in the ‘70s and Fela Kuti."

Abijako started two years ago. His first look book for his first collection was released on his Twitter feed while he has still a senior at Albany High School.
He said his label “pays homage to his past by celebrating his West African culture through a contemporary perspective, or, as he Abijako puts it, ‘minimalist streetwear approach with social and political commentary.’

Well done, Taofeek. We look forward to more excellent, representative designs in the near future. Don't stop!
